Ethical Sourcing

Ibiraci - Brazil

Local farmers have found that forming strong partnerships with trusted traders within the specialty coffee industry has had a substantial positive impact on their income. The community of coffee producers in Ibiraci has taken significant strides by incorporating modern technologies and cutting-edge approaches to enhance the quality of specialty coffee being grown in the region.

The shift towards mechanized harvesting has been widespread, with a preference for natural processing methods. Innovation is showcased through the use of techniques like cement drying, asphalt patios, and large mechanical dryers on their expansive estates to maintain the integrity of the premium coffee beans. The primary objective for these farmers remains centered on perfecting the art of naturally dried coffee cherries.

Why Coffee Pods?

As a non-profit all proceeds from our wholesale, cafes, retail sales and events go towards funding our barista course and graduate support system. To increase our funding, we decided it would be a good idea to diversity our product line. Here at SEND we encourage inclusivity and diversity, so it’s only natural we would want to increase our coffees accessibility to whomever would like to drink our coffee, regardless of their brew method!

Aluminium vs Compostable Pods

Compostable pods are great because they compost overtime. However, they only have one life which bears the question of the amount of energy that's consumed to manufacture them, against recyclable and reusable products such as aluminium cans, pods etc. Which, we know are really easy to recycle and reuse and so from an energy perspective, they're manufactured and go on to have multiple lifecycles.

Whilst compostable materials have improved over the years, they are nowhere near as good of an oxygen barrier as aluminium. Oxygen kills the freshness of coffee. This means that whilst the shelf life might say years, realistically it's probably a matter of months. Also MOQs for compostable pods are very high, so there's every chance the pods have already started to stale before they've even been dispatched to the consumer.

The lid on a compostable pod is a really bad oxygen barrier as it's essentially just a piece of paper. Second to this, because it's a piece of paper, it causes the water to flow through the pod very quickly. When water flows through too quickly it doesn't have the time to extract enough from the coffee. So the only way to combat this and achieve higher extraction, is to roast much darker. Which isn't ideal for specialty coffee. We like sweet, acidic and lightly roasted coffee. This simply isn't currently possible in compostable pods.

Due to the large scale recycling initiatives and quality assurances of aluminium pods, we have decided to choose this material. However, we will remain ever vigilant for innovative solutions and will alter our products as needs be.
